Triathlon Training Day 32 – Swimming and Running

December 12, 2015

Today was a Swim and Run day. It started with time in the endless pool at Elevate Fitness. Yesterday was such a great day for progress. Today, not so much. Coach Marci was there, as always, and like usual we started by just practicing swimming for several minutes. For some reason I was out of breath before I even started. It was a really weird feeling. I think some of it may be due to the lack of sleep I have been getting. I couldn’t breathe right at all this morning. I would dunk my head and instantly be out of breath. I would need to breathe even before my head came up each time I hit my left stroke. It was crazy. We swam for about an hour with the same issue for the whole swim.

This evening I went out for a run. It was an 8 mile run with five 1-minute sprints. The objective was to see how far I can go each sprint and try an maintain at least the same speed at the beginning as the end. This was one of my favorite runs because my son came with me. I would post some pictures of my adventure but my  Samsung Note Edge died again. How frustrating to have my phone die every single time I run. Their has to be something wrong with it.

The run started out brisk but beautiful. I ran around the trails in AF, Highland, Alpine as the sun was setting and incorporated the sprints throughout. The run was the same as the swim this morning – oxygen deprived. There ar many times that I wonder if the mononucleosis(epstein bar) I contracted while on my mission has something to do with this feeling of being oxygen deprived. It is usually accompanied with prolonged sleep deprivation. Like I said earlier my buddy brought his bike and rode along side me as we traversed the beautiful trails along Utah mountains. It was really fun to spend time together and just talk about life. What a great kid with a great heart. We ran for several miles and then began the sprinting segments. Luckily I had my watch to track with Nike Plus Running but it is much harder than using the “Lap” function on Sports Tracker.

This is how the sprints turned out.

  • Sprint #1 – .22 Miles
  • Sprint #2 – .24 Miles
  • Sprint #3 – .25 Miles
  • Sprint #4 – .30 Miles (This was downhill)
  • Sprint #5 – .22 Miles
  • Extra Sprint (#6) – .24 Miles

Coach Marci was happy that I did an extra segment. I was pleased that I was able to maintain similar distances in spite of the breathing issues. By the time we made it home it was dark, we were both feeling exhausted, frozen and happy.

All together it was about 3 hours of training.
